As a student and alumnus of Creighton University, Shane Broderick, BSBA’16, was a passionate promoter of the University, engaging his former high school counselors about Creighton’s merits, helping to recruit new students to the Heider College of Business through such events as the Heider Fellows weekend and remaining connected to Creighton after graduation while working for KPMG.
“From the get-go, Shane bought into everything Creighton had to offer,” says Joe Broderick, Shane’s father. Broderick and his wife Beth established the Shane Broderick Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund in memory of their son who passed away last fall. “Creighton had a significant, positive effect on Shane, and we wanted to help someone else have that same experience as he did.”
The one-year scholarship is open to academically eligible incoming freshman who have graduated from a Catholic high school and who share the same characteristics that Shane possessed: excellence in the classroom, a commitment to service and willingness to lead. Financial need is not a requirement.
Progressing quickly from inception to execution, the first recipient of the scholarship is from Denver, CO and started classes last week.
“Shane was the embodiment of Creighton,” says Anthony R. Hendrickson, PhD, dean of the Heider College of Business and Shane’s adviser in the Dean’s Fellow program. “He was intelligent and charismatic, involved in campus life. He gave back to the community as one of the student leaders of the Creighton Business Symposium and through service as a Dean’s Fellow. He is missed. This scholarship is a fitting way for his presence to remain with us here at Creighton and the Heider College of Business.”
This was the Brodericks’ intent when they established the endowed scholarship. “We’d like his memory to live on in the Creighton community and think a scholarship is the best way to achieve this,” says Joe.
